Eleusis and The Sanctuary of Brauronian Artemis

Eleusis. This place was mostly in ruins and hard to imagine what it must have looked like originally. This area had a lot do to with the story of Demeter and her daughter Persephone. Persephone was taken by Hades to the underworld. Demeter searched the earth for her but couldn't find her. Finally Hades brought her back and Persephone told Demeter that she liked it with Hades. So it was decided she would spend half of the year with her mother and the other half in the underworld with Hades. This myth was used to describe the changes in the seasons. Fall and winter are when Persephone is with Hades because Demeter is sad and misses her. And spring and summer is when mom and daughter are back together. This sight was very cool and had a small but interesting museum and very pretty flowers. :)

This was said to be the opening to the underworld that Persephone and Hades used

The Sanctuary of Artemis was a place where girls used to stay, and pregnant women had to make offerings to Artemis.

Here we acted out another play, I mean had an intense intellectual discussion. *cough, cough. This play had three acts and dealt with Agememnon and his daughter Iphigeneia. He had her sacraficed to Artemis for better winds, but she ended up being saved and bacame a priestess to Artemis.
